Memorial Round Up
But this is Memorial Day. A day to remember those who were lost to war and those still fighting.
Every Memorial Day in my hometown in Pennsylvania, three generations of names are called out to be remembered for their duty to their country. George Czapp Jr, my father, George T Czapp, my brother and Steven D. Czapp, my nephew. Add to those names my husband, my son and the women of my family who were never really recognized for their work and sacrifice for their country.
This Memorial Day, I wish to salute a fallen American soldier whose remains were finally repatriated and returned to his family for burial. Staff Sergeant Matt Maupin, an Army Reservist from Batavia, OH, was captured by insurgents on April 4, 2004 when his convoy came under attack. A tip from an Iraqi civilian led to the discovery and recovery of Matt’s body on March 20th, 2008, north of Baghdad. By then, Matt had been missing in action for nearly four years. His memorial service was attended by thousands, filling a local stadium. Welcome home, brother.
Audubon South Carolina’s mission is to protect habitats and the animals, especially birds, that live therein. On Memorial Day, we remember the millions of men and women that have served and those that have sacrificed their bodies and lives so that we may live the lives of our choosing, including protecting and teaching about the unique place that is the virgin, old-growth swamp of the Francis Beidler Forest.
