Thursday Thirteen

Local roundup

Thursdays are quite busy around here, I’ll be back tomorrow with a more thorough round up, but I must get ready for tonight’s meet up.  Here are thirteen quick hits to tide you over.

Bill Lawtzke points small business owners toward helpful tax information from the IRS.

Patrick shares his weekly list of highlights, among them is a link to an announcement that Diet Coke will be dropping sodium benzoate from its ingredients.

Rev. BigDumbChimp is not a fan of A&E’s remake of The Andromeda Strain.

Babbie:

So it is that once again the local rag finds Arthur Ravenel’s comments of a month ago to be front page news, complete with Board Chairman Douglas’s sanctimonious posturing, while important new information gets buried in the back pages. Instead of headlining Ravenel’s Comments Denounced, the news should have read ” CCSD Finally Votes to Revoke SeaIslands Charter.” But then the focus would have been on the Board’s AND the Superintendent’s failures instead of Ravenel’s.

Jeff muses on the Mt. Pleasant lifestyle:

And, as I write this (8:13pm, scheduled for publication tomorrow morning) there is still no water. Even the roaches have gone elsewhere to find something to drink.

I was outside a few minutes ago, joined by a few thirsty and unshowered neighbors, and watched as the water system crew (whatever they’re called — are they even legitimate?) banged on some pipes and rearranged their trucks on the street and on the grass. (Hey, you can’t lean on a truck in the same position all day.) I was sure they were doing something, but it was difficult to discern exactly what that might be. I now realize that my confidence was merely hope.

Greg Hambrick cites a Forbes article noting Speaker of the House Bobby Harrell blocked a bill that would have tightened regulations on payday lending.

David Farrow takes a look at the politics currently in play between County Council, Mayor Riley, and Chief Rusty Thomas:

One thing is certain. Because of the fire, the mayor’s judgment and power are being called into question by his own allies. To my memory, this has never happened.

It’s time for someone with the right qualifications (being a native would help—white or black) who stopped all the frills and public development and concentrated on the real needs of the city such as flooding, infrastructure and the Battery.

Dan is running a Spoleto themed caption contest, both at Spoleto Today and Fun & Games.

Conservative Amazon:

I’m really sick of this idea that men are naturally weak, and therefore cannot be expected to control themselves. It feeds into a lot of nasty sexual politics, and can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Men (and women) who tell themselves that they are incapable of fidelity will naturally have no reason to strive for it. If they end up cheating, they can always blame their biology, or stupid American mores for their fall.

Geoff visits home, but is no longer sure exactly where that is.

Are you celebrating gnocchi day?  Don’t worry, you have seven more chances this year.

Theo Moore is excited about his new Scion.

John Stoehr shares a list of his favorite Spoleto performances, so far.
